Meze Mangal to expand this summer
Friend of BC, Nick, reports that Turkish restaurant Meze Mangal is due to expand this summer. The team are set to move in to the empty space next door to their hugely popular restaurant on Lewisham Way.
The windows for that part of the property are currently obscured by a large sea container (which houses charcoal for their oven), so we assume that the metal box will finally be going, making this doubly-good news.
At one point, they planned to open a patisserie in that space, but this plan was shelved a few years ago.

It amazes me that people think nothing of that monstrosity yet Sky dishes on houses are apparently an eyesore.
i wouldnt say that people think nothing of it, in fact i think its one of the most complained about eyesores in brockley. and yes, where most of the houses in the conservation area have been split in to 3+ flats, allowing sky dishes could mean each house being covered in them which would be an eyesore.
Really who exactly are "people" one person, five people?
Anyway, let's hope it's not another false start. The maze mangal reputation deserves better than that horrible blue box but does beg the question, where will they store their charcoal?

I also have no idea what the first poster is on about. That container has been a source of local controversy for years.

Why haven't the owners of the sea container at least painted it?
If it was a 2nd hand shop or fried chicken there would have been uproar over that container.
It don't enhance the area and encourages an attitude of if local buisness don't give a stuff why should anyone else.
Even taggers can't be arsed to spray it.
Nick I would think you assume wrongly...knock through internally, customers use the existing entrance....if current customers don't mind the container why should it need to be moved?

Great news. Just had a takeaway lahmacun and salad for lunch to celebrate.
It doesnt HAVE to move but it's fairly uncontoversial that a dirty great rusty container outside your restaurant is hardly likely to attract custom. It's somewhat subjective but I'm prepared to assert that a large majority think that's it's an eyesore. Obviously.
The container and the abandoned shop, made me think that Meze Mangal kitchen was probably filled with vermin, hence I never went to eat there.
I look forward to try them once they have cleaned up next door.
The kitchen's open; you can tell it's not. The food's delicious and cheap (and the house wine is very reasonable); it's always full, because of its reputation, presumably. They are friendly and accommodating. I doubt they care what you think!

I have never ventured into the Meze Mangal because any restaurant that keeps that monstrosity outside clearly does not give a toss. It is a very poor reflection on them.
If they want to expand and attract new customers they need to smarten up the appearance of their restaurant.
Until this changes I shall go up Dalston way and find some good honest Turkish nosh rather tolerate this Lewisham Way eyesore.
Did someone really just say they went to Dalston, that famously beautiful place, just to avoid a container outside what it is widely acknowledged to be one of the better affordable restaurants in London? Brilliant. Particularly, when you consider that even south London averse Time Out food writers (many of whom live in amd around Dalston) make the journey to eat there.
It's time to update the list on Lewisham's wiki page of famous people living here, since clearly the blue borough is blessed to have Hyacinth Bucket in its midst.
Anonymous 00;03, they are always busy, are expanding and are the fourth best restaurant in London, according to Tripadvisor. I'm sure they will really miss you.
My attitude on he Sea Container? That place brings a net amount of positive happiness and good vibes and we are lucky to ave them. The container can stay.
If they painted the container a bright colour, and stuck a sign up - youo'd pay to store your clutter there
Dalston does have some famously good Turkish restaurants....and no containers!
Sure, if we are going to have 'how smart is my manor' competition, there are certainly parts of Dalston that make Deptford look posh.
But that monstrosity outside the Meze mangles its reputation.

The rotting sea container is typical of the attitude of Lewisham.
If people don't see it as a problem, then don't get annoyed if another retail unit decides to plonk one on its forecourt.
Could provide a cheaper alternative to that new storage facility on Lewisham Way and doesn't planning permission.
The more the merrier, will enhance the area no end.
It would even look better if they had a transit van parked out there and used that to store the wood. Works for the Broca!
In areas where you see a Victorian architecture, the shopping parades have frontage that was used to stack merchandise on display. You still see this on some parades, especially in from of hardware or grocery shops.
However, for many shops, it is regarded as a convenient parking place by the shop owner. The land being part of the shop rather than part of the public realm. Often the pavement is wrecked and unsafe.
Consequently we get these eyesores on redundant shop fronts.
I am sure it would not be beyond the wit of man (or Lewisham council) to fix this problem.
Any restauranteur that imagines that this sends out a positive message is deluded.

I have been boycotting Meze Mangal because of the eyesore that is the sea container. (I'm sure they would be gutted to learn that they're losing my business!!)
I really don't rate MM's food, despite the hype, sorry. Outrageously bad vegetarian moussaka. Average to uninspiring everything else. Seriously overrated. And the shipping container is ridiculous. The emperor wears no clothes.
Meze Mangal gets a nod in this evenings ES Magazine. "... voted more popular than the Ritz by an online guide recently".
